Basilica di San Paolo fuori le mura, Rome

Basilica di San Paolo fuori le mura is the papal basilica dedicated to Paul of Tarsus, and it remains the larger Roman papal basilica after Saint Peter’s. The broad façade and colonnaded forecourt announce a place made for arrival: this is also the church of the Benedictine abbey beside it. Its name tells you why it stands apart from Rome’s historic core: the basilica lies beyond the Aurelian Walls, along the Via Ostiense.

Christian tradition places Paul’s burial here, beneath the papal altar, and pilgrims have come to this site since antiquity. The building before you carries a dramatic rupture in its story. A devastating blaze in July eighteen twenty-three almost wiped out the earlier church.

Reconstruction followed, with Luigi Poletti directing most of the work for decades. The renewed church was consecrated in eighteen fifty-four, although work continued long afterward. The vast interior-facing complex gathers church, monastery, and pilgrimage route into a single precinct.

Though it stands in Italy, the Holy See owns this basilica under extraterritorial status. It also forms part of a UNESCO World Heritage property.
