Andrássy út, Budapest

Andrássy út is a grand Budapest boulevard, stretching between Erzsébet Square and the City Park. Its character changes as you walk: dense façades and fashionable businesses give way to broader stretches with trees, villas, and gardens. Look along the building fronts for elaborate stonework, sculpted details, and deep window surrounds; these mansions and townhouses were created in a Neo-renaissance spirit, with carefully finished interiors as well as façades.

The avenue began taking shape in 1872 and opened ceremonially on August 20, 1876. Beneath the roadway runs the Millennium Underground Railway, built for the celebrations of 1896 and recognised as the earliest underground railway on continental Europe. The avenue and the underground line, together with Heroes’ Square, form a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2002.

As you continue, the Hungarian State Opera House, the Hungarian University of Fine Arts, the Zoltán Kodály Memorial Museum and Archives, and the Ferenc Hopp Museum of East Asian Arts give the route an unusually rich cultural sequence. Andrássy út also carries cafés, restaurants, theatres, embassies, luxury boutiques, and everyday city life in the same architectural setting.
