Albert Cuyp-markt, Amsterdam

The Albert Cuyp Market is a street market spread along Albert Cuypstraat, between Ferdinand Bolstraat and Van Woustraat in De Pijp. Its name honours Albert Cuyp, a painter from the 17th century. The market grew from informal vendors and handcarts; after the city organised it in 1905, it began with Saturday evening trading, It later shifted to daytime trading, operating throughout the working week from 1912.

Today, its stalls offer produce, fish, clothing, flowers, fabrics and other goods, with a strong multicultural character shaped by Amsterdam communities of Surinamese, Antillean, Turkish and Moroccan origin. Fresh stroopwafels are made here. The market is described as the busiest in the Netherlands and claims to be Europe’s largest daytime market. On the street, you can also find the statue of singer André Hazes, whose talent was discovered here while he performed as a street artist.
