14 Henrietta Street museum, Dublin
14 Henrietta Street museum is a social history museum in Dublin, and its rooms carry the story of a house transformed by changing fortunes. The museum opened in September 2018 and follows the residents who lived here across its different chapters. By 1877, the grand staircase had been removed and the house was divided into 17 tenement flats.
That change turned an elite Georgian townhouse into crowded accommodation for many families. The building was eventually closed as a tenement in 1979. Restoration began in 2006 and took more than ten years, creating a museum that presents the house from its Georgian origins through its later tenement life. As you take in the surviving rooms and domestic details, the striking subject is not just architecture, but the people who made a home here under very different conditions.
