„0” kilométerkő, Budapest
The Zero Kilometre Stone is a limestone sculpture marking Hungary’s kilometre zero, shaped as a large numeral. The work rises about 3 m above an 80 cm pedestal, and its surface carries the letters “KM”, the abbreviation for kilometres. Its stark geometric outline is easy to pick out in the small park at Clark Ádám tér, beside the Buda end of Chain Bridge and below Buda Castle.
Miklós Borsos created this version, unveiled in 1975. Road distances for Hungary’s single-digit main routes are measured from here, with stated exceptions, along with routes 10 and 31. The starting point once stood at the threshold of the Buda Royal Palace; it moved here when Chain Bridge was completed in 1849. The earlier Madonna monument from 1932 was destroyed during World War II.
