Vojanovy sady, Prague

Vojanovy sady are a broad orchard park enclosed by buildings and a high baroque wall. Their history reaches back to a medieval bishops’ estate, and the garden became part of a Carmelite convent in the 17th century. The public name arrived after 1954, honouring actor Eduard Vojan, who was born in nearby Míšeňská Street.

Look toward the raised terrace with its balustrade, pergola, and fountain: this section preserves the feeling of a monastic garden. The park is also known for its peacocks. Along the surrounding wall, you can find a niche chapel dedicated to Saint John of Nepomuk; its statue, made by Ignác František Platzer in 1749, shows the saint standing on a fish.

Another chapel, Saint Elias, is built as an artificial grotto. The garden’s most intimate surprise is that its earlier life combined contemplation, fruit growing, and vegetable cultivation within one enclosed space.
