Vinohrady, Prague
Vinohrady is a cadastral district of Prague, a broad neighbourhood east of the New Town. Its name preserves the memory of vineyards cultivated here from the medieval era, on slopes beyond the old city gates. King Charles the Fourth fostered local winegrowing, and the district later carried the name Royal Vineyards.
After Prague’s fortifications began to disappear, prosperous households built outward from the National Museum, transforming these slopes into an urban quarter. Vinohrady became part of Greater Prague in nineteen twenty-two. Its identity remains unusually fragmented: it is now divided among five Prague administrative districts, more than any other Prague neighbourhood. That administrative puzzle makes the older name feel especially durable.
