Villa Comunale, Naples

Villa Comunale is a historic park stretching along Naples’ coast, with planted paths, fountains, sculptures, and small architectural pavilions. Its long promenade extends for over 1 km between Piazza della Vittoria and Piazza della Repubblica, following the curve of the bay. The park began as a royal garden created for Ferdinand IV between 1778 and 1780, when Carlo Vanvitelli turned reclaimed coastal land into an urban promenade.

For a time, the royal family reserved it, although people could enter on special feast days. Permanent public access came in 1869, after Italian unification. As you move through the grounds, look for the circular Torquato Tasso temple by Stefano Gasse, which contains a bust of the poet by Tito Angelini.

Nearby, the Cassa Armonica forms a delicate pavilion of cast iron and glass, built in 1877 from Enrico Alvino’s design and restored in 2017. The park also houses the Anton Dohrn zoological station, a scientific institution established in the 1870s. Its setting still reveals the original idea: a formal seaside walk that gradually became a public city park.
