Tym co za polskość Gdańska is a memorial made from massive concrete blocks, shaped as an axe driven into the earth. Relief work across the blocks gives that severe form its visual force. The design came from Wawrzyniec Samp and Wiesław Pietron.

The monument was unveiled on 28 December 1969 beside Podwale Staromiejskie, and it commemorates those who died for Gdańsk’s Polish identity from the massacre of 1308 through the end of the Second World War. A commemorative plaque was added in May 2008 through the efforts of the Gdańsk Polonia Circle and the Society of Friends of Gdańsk. Ceremonies marking the end of the Second World War in Europe take place here. Its inscription invokes people who serve their homeland and are granted an open road to heaven.
