These massive concrete forms are Tym co za polskość Gdańska, a memorial for people who gave their lives for the Polish character of Gdańsk. It was unveiled beside Podwale Staromiejskie on the twenty-eighth of December, nineteen sixty-nine. The monument’s remembrance reaches from the Gdańsk massacre in thirteen oh eight to the close of the Second World War.

Wawrzyniec Samp and Wiesław Pietroń conceived this work. Its assembled blocks represent an axe embedded in the earth, turning a weapon into a heavy public emblem. Let the reliefs worked into the concrete hold your attention; they soften the severe mass with traces of human experience.

A memorial plaque joined the monument in May two thousand eight, through the efforts of the Gdańsk Polish Community circle and the Friends of Gdańsk Society. Beneath it, an inscription connects devotion to the homeland with a route toward heaven. This is also a gathering place for commemorations of the end of the war in Europe.
