Sundbergs, Stockholm

Sundbergs is the long-established café at Järntorget 83 in Stockholm’s Old Town. Its story begins in 1785, when confectioner and sugar baker Gustaf Adolf Sundberg founded the business. After becoming a court confectioner in 1793, he moved the shop to Järntorget, where he already lived.

The café drew Stockholm’s social elite, including the group known as the Skeppsbroadeln and people working in banking, earning it the nickname “Little Exchange.” The Sundberg family kept ownership until 1944. Today, Sundbergs presents itself as Stockholm’s oldest café still in operation.

The address has an earlier chapter too: an inn called Gripen opened here in 1605 under Meinert Feltman. His death in 1607 led to a dispute between his widow and his brother over who should continue running it, and the inn’s eventual fate is unknown.
