SS Sołdek, Gdańsk

SS Sołdek is a museum ship: a Polish steam-powered freighter made to carry coal and ore. After the war, she became the earliest oceangoing vessel completed entirely in Poland, built at the Gdańsk Shipyard. That achievement made her the lead vessel of the B thirty class, a run of twenty-nine small bulk carriers produced there between nineteen forty-nine and nineteen fifty-four.

Her name honours Stanisław Sołdek, a shipyard template maker celebrated for his work. Helena Sołdek, his wife, christened the vessel. This was no ceremonial showpiece: by the close of nineteen eighty, she had made one thousand four hundred seventy-nine sea voyages, moved more than three and a half million tonnes of cargo, and called at over sixty ports.

Later, the ship became a floating storehouse on the Oder in Szczecin. Since nineteen eighty-five, this preserved freighter has welcomed visitors as part of Gdańsk’s National Maritime Museum. Her purposeful, industrial form now holds the memory of a working life shaped by steam, cargo, and the rebuilding of Polish seafaring.
