Spritmuseum, Stockholm

Spritmuseum is a museum devoted to Sweden’s history of wine, spirits, and alcohol production. Its exhibitions bring together old manufacturing and bottling equipment, historic Swedish beverage labels, material about drinking customs and drinking songs, and objects connected with ancient wine history. You can also encounter the complete interior of a wine shop from the period before Systembolaget’s monopoly.

The museum includes three exhibition venues, with a permanent interactive presentation called Sweden: Spirits of a Nation. It also operates as an art gallery through the Absolut Art Collection, assembled for Absolut Vodka from 1986 onward and including work by Andy Warhol and many other artists. The museum began in Stockholm in 1967 and moved to its present Djurgården premises in 2012. The result is a place where industrial history, social habits, and contemporary art share the same subject: Sweden’s complicated relationship with drink.
