Schefflerska palatset, Stockholm

Schefflerska palatset is a mansion on Drottninggatan, built around 1700 as the summer residence of merchant Hans Petter Scheffler. The monogram above the gate portal records the builder’s initials. Since the 1830s, the house has also been known as Spökslottet, or the Ghost Palace.

Local stories of strange sounds, music, singing, and breaking mirrors have circulated since the 1700s, while a grave monument once stood in the park and was removed in 1907. The building was renovated in 1875 and 1876 under architect Axel Kumlien. Inside, Johan Adolf Berg’s bequest includes 347 paintings, with works by Pieter Bruegel the Younger, Jan Both, Tiepolo, Alexander Roslin, and Pehr Hilleström. The palace also holds Orrefors art glass made between 1913 and 1983.
