Rosenborg Slot, Copenhagen
Rosenborg Castle is a Renaissance castle in Copenhagen, built as a country summerhouse in 1606 as part of Christian IV’s architectural work. Its present form emerged through expansions completed by 1624, with Hans van Steenwinckel the Younger involved in planning the structure. The building follows Dutch Renaissance practice, associated with Danish construction of that period.
Inside, the Long Hall was finished in 1624 as a ballroom and later served receptions and banquets. Its contents include the coronation chair, the queens’ throne, and three silver lions. The castle presents the Royal Collections, including the Crown Jewels and Danish Crown Regalia.
It stands in the King’s Garden, a royal garden embellished in Renaissance style by Christian IV shortly before the castle was built. The building became public in 1838.
