Pracownia Zegarów Wieżowych, Gdańsk

Pracownia Zegarów Wieżowych is a tower-clock workshop within Gdańsk Science Museum, a branch of the Museum of Gdańsk in the Old Town. Its home occupies an interior within the tower of Saint Catherine Alexandrian Church, made available through an agreement involving the city, the museum, and the Carmelites. The museum opened in nineteen ninety-six.

Here, rescued tower-clock mechanisms map the craft’s development from the fifteenth century through the twentieth; warfare, fires, and altered conditions in church towers had made continued service impossible for many of them. The work here goes beyond conserving old machinery. Museum staff built the world’s most accurate mechanical pendulum clock, whose daily error falls within tens of microseconds.

They also created a pulsar clock: when installed, it was the world’s most accurate clock and the earliest to take its time signal from beyond Earth. Late in twenty sixteen, the museum installed a pendulum measuring thirty-one metres and twenty-two centimetres, the longest in the world. This workshop turns the hidden mechanisms of public timekeeping into a story of precision, survival, and invention.
