Polonia, Warszawa

Polonia is a drama theatre, created in Warsaw by Krystyna Janda’s cultural foundation in two thousand five. Its home is a building at Marszałkowska fifty-six within the Marszałkowska Housing District. Before the theatre arrived, this address contained the Polonia cinema; earlier still, it was the Imperial cinema before the war.

The foundation took over the cinema auditorium in February two thousand five and converted it for live performance. A smaller stage opened that year, and the main auditorium began with Chekhov’s Three Sisters in December two thousand six. Polonia grew into a major Warsaw venue, drawing about a quarter-million audience members annually. Its programme confronts ageing, homosexuality, and women’s role in marriage, alongside concerts, recitals, and visiting productions.
