Petřín Lookout Tower, Prague

Petřín Lookout Tower rises from the hill garden as Prague’s compact answer to Paris: a steel tower completed for the Jubilee Exhibition in eighteen ninety-one. Its shape owes its existence to Czech hikers who saw the Eiffel Tower at Paris’s world fair, then brought the idea home. Engineers assembled the ironwork with remarkable speed, finishing the project within four months.

Notice the open latticework wrapped around the tower and the enclosed entrance beneath it. The structure served both sightseers and broadcasters; television equipment later displaced its lift, until restoration returned an elevator. The paired internal stairways wind separately around the structure, giving climbers and descending visitors their own routes. It remains a defining Prague landmark, rising more than sixty-five metres above Petřín.
