Park Wilanowski, Warsaw
Park Wilanowski spreads around the palace grounds as a formal garden shaped for King John the Third Sobieski’s former residence. Its layout began alongside the palace during the latter part of the seventeenth century, arranged on a shared axis. Notice the clipped hedges, gravel paths, water, and sculptural details: this is a landscape designed as carefully as architecture.
The park covers forty-five hectares when Wilanów Lake and the Sobieski Canal are included. A brick wall divides the Italian-style garden into terraces, linked by steps with a stone rail decorated by figures representing seasons and stages of love. Beneath those steps lies an artificial grotto.
War damage left the grounds in poor condition, but restorers under Gerard Ciołek revived the park’s historic paths and avenues after the war. The park is protected as a historic monument.
