Parco Virgiliano, Naples

Parco Virgiliano is a scenic park spread across Posillipo hill, with terraces that open wide views over the Gulf of Naples. Built on the coastal tufa of Posillipo, it feels closely shaped by the hillside beneath it. Look along the terrace edges: the panorama reaches toward Vesuvius, the islands of Ischia, Capri and Procida, Nisida, and the bays of Trentaremi and Pozzuoli.

The park opened in 1931, originally carrying the name Park of Victory or Beauty, and later became Virgiliano in honour of the Roman poet Virgil. Its amenities include playgrounds for children and a small amphitheater used for summer performances. The amphitheater gives this panoramic park a lively purpose beyond sightseeing, while the layered terraces keep the landscape itself at the heart of the visit.
