Państwowa Galeria Sztuki, Sopot
Państwowa Galeria Sztuki is Sopot’s municipal gallery beside Plac Zdrojowy, a place where art is not confined to exhibition rooms but also reaches into learning and publishing. Its past begins in nineteen fifty-two, when it operated as a branch of the Central Bureau for Art Exhibitions. It later became an independent exhibition bureau, housed in timber pavilions on Bohaterów Monte Cassino until fire destroyed that base in nineteen eighty.
The institution has used its present name since nineteen ninety-two. The building now associated with the gallery comes from a design by Jacek Szczęsny ARCHI-CAD, completed in two thousand nine. The gallery sits within the resort district’s busy public life: this is a civic cultural institution supported by Sopot’s budget, rather than a private showroom.
Its programme has brought work by Frank O. Gehry, Joseph Beuys, Bruno Schulz, Alfred Kubin, László Moholy-Nagy, Jerzy Nowosielski, and Teresa Pągowska to Sopot. That range gives this address an unusually broad artistic horizon, linking local visitors with major figures from Polish and international art.
