Östermalms Saluhall, Stockholm

Östermalms Saluhall is a market hall where people shop for food and delicacies, housed in a remarkable brick building at the corner by Östermalmstorg. Its story begins with a rapid construction: the hall was completed in 1888, and its doors opened to the public on 1 December that year. Isak Gustaf Clason and Kasper Salin designed it and also created its intricate cast-iron structure.

Look at the corner tower, whose slate roof carries a lantern crowned by the winged hat of Hermes, a symbol of trade. The hall reaches the street through five entrances. After a major renewal, the building reopened on 5 March 2020, retaining its original form and colours while becoming a more functional trading place. Inside, the market continues to bring together specialist food sellers and the public.
