Olympiapark, Munich
Olympiapark is an urban park created for Munich’s 1972 Summer Olympics. The grounds still host sporting contests, concerts, exhibitions, civic gatherings and religious services, so this is an active venue as well as open parkland. Its Olympic buildings have accommodated 31 world championships, 12 European championships and nearly 100 German championships since the 1972 Games.
By November 2015, the park had welcomed more than 200 million visitors across over 11,500 events. Construction began in 1968, and the park’s continuing life reflects the original ambition of combining Olympic facilities with public space. The site is also remembered for its contemporary carillon, which forms part of the park’s cultural character.
The Olympiapark München company, wholly owned by Munich’s municipal government, operates the Olympic grounds. As you take in the broad lawns, paths and large-scale structures, you are seeing a place designed to keep changing through sport, culture and public gatherings.
