Municipal House, Prague
Municipal House is Prague’s lavish civic and concert building beside the Powder Gate on Republic Square. Its entrance is framed by sculpture, ornament, and a great arched mosaic; let those crowded surfaces set the tone before you enter the story. Built from nineteen oh five to nineteen twelve by Antonín Balšánek and Osvald Polívka, it wears Art Nouveau: an early modern manner that turns architecture into flowing, decorative display.
Above the entrance, Karel Špillar’s mosaic pays tribute to Prague, while Ladislav Šaloun’s sculptural groups evoke a people brought low and then renewed. This was not merely ceremonial decoration. Here, on the twenty-eighth of October nineteen eighteen, Czechoslovak independence was proclaimed.
Within, Smetana Hall serves both as a concert venue and ballroom, beneath a glass dome. The house remains a setting for concerts, exhibitions, and civic occasions.
