Nowa Oranżeria, Warsaw
Nowa Oranżeria is a greenhouse building in the southern part of Łazienki Królewskie, beside the avenue known as Droga Wilanowska or Chińska. It was built in the years eighteen sixty to eighteen sixty-one as the park’s later greenhouse. Adam Adolf Loewe and Józef Orłowski were its architects.
Notice the long glazed hall: it originally sheltered exotic trees through the cold season. Along the southern façade, slender cast-iron columns divide the windows, giving the structure an almost delicate rhythm. Sculptures by Leon Molatyński occupy the windows set into the solid wall sections: Vertumnus and Pomona appear below, while Autumn and Winter are placed above.
The building now contains a permanent garden of varied plants, including tropical species. Since nineteen ninety-two, it has also housed the Belvedere restaurant.
