Nationalmuseet, Copenhagen
Nationalmuseet is Denmark’s national museum of cultural history, housed in this main building near Strøget. Its collections connect Danish experience with cultures from across the world, reaching from Greenland to South America. Inside, the story of Denmark stretches across 14,000 years, from Ice Age reindeer hunters through the Viking age and medieval religious art.
You can also encounter objects from ancient Greece, Rome, Egypt, the Near East, and the Caribbean. Among the museum’s notable Danish pieces are the Trundholm Sun Chariot, the Egtved Girl coffin, the Hjortspring boat, and the Gundestrup cauldron. A remarkable recent chapter is its return, in 2024, of a sacred feathered cloak to the Tupinambá people of Brazil.
