Muzeum Sopotu, Sopot
Muzeum Sopotu is the city’s historical museum, founded in two thousand one. Behind the garden fence, it occupies a protected villa built in nineteen oh three for Ernst Claaszen, a merchant from Gdańsk. The house still feels like a private residence rather than a purpose-built gallery.
Claaszen collected antiques and artworks, while his family cultivated a lasting interest in the art and culture of Gdańsk. The museum’s restoration returned the villa to its earlier appearance, drawing on period photographs donated by Ruth Koch, Claaszen’s daughter. The formal rooms now evoke the domestic world of a prosperous household from that era, while other spaces host changing exhibitions.
This is also Sopot’s memory room: its holdings include paintings, prints, sculpture, ceramics, decorative objects, photographs, documents, maps, postcards, and publications connected with the city and region. An exhibition about residents rebuilding their lives during the years after the war earned the Sybilla award in two thousand thirteen. The nearby shore makes the setting especially apt: a seaside resort’s history gathered inside the home of a collector.
