Most Zielony, Gdańsk

Most Zielony is the bridge over the Motława that joins Gdańsk’s Main Town to Granary Island. At the western abutment, it meets the Green Gate, with Long Market and Long Embankment leading into the crossing; Stągiewna Street starts at the eastern end. This short span gathers routes from both banks into a single, busy seam of the old city.

The bridge was built in 1564 from plans by Dirk Daniels, replacing an earlier crossing known as Koga Bridge. Its name is linked either to the tint of its building stone or to mould that once coated its supports. For centuries, its moving section could open for vessels on the river.

Rebuilt many times, it suffered damage during the war; after reconstruction, it no longer operated as a drawbridge. Trams continued across here until 1959, serving the route toward Stogi. Now it belongs to people on foot, yet it still marks a meeting point between river traffic, the historic royal route, and the streets of Gdańsk.
