Monteliusvägen, Stockholm

Monteliusvägen is a cliffside promenade along Mariaberget, opened in 1998, and its broad outlook reaches across Riddarfjärden. The path extends for 416 metres above Söder Mälarstrand, with terraces and benches placed along the route. Notice the fragments of millstones set into the retaining walls: they come from the foundation of a former windmill, probably Stora Pryssan.

The small terraces also preserve traces of garden plots where tobacco was once cultivated. Monteliusvägen honours Oscar Montelius, an archaeologist and historian who joined the Swedish Academy in 1917. He was born and died in Monteliushuset on S:t Paulsgatan, the building that bears his name. The route opened after protests about its effect on Mariaberget, and its construction also included repairs to the site's deteriorating retaining walls.
