Monciak, Sopot
Monciak, the familiar name for Bohaterów Monte Cassino Street, is Sopot’s ceremonial pedestrian promenade. It runs from Independence Avenue by the rail station toward Spa Square beside the waterfront and pier. No cars use this route.
Long ago, in the seventeenth century, this way joined farm country in Upper Sopot with the fishing settlement on the shore. When Sopot belonged to the Free City of Danzig, the street was called Seestraße; after the war it carried Konstanty Rokossowski’s name until nineteen fifty-six. Today, restaurants, cafés, clubs, and shops occupy much of the street.
Along the descending stretch, caricaturists and painters work beside souvenir stalls and seasonal dining terraces. Notice the changing shopfronts and the stream of people that give this promenade its theatre-like rhythm. Krzywy Domek, the Crooked House, is among the notable sights along the way. At Spa Square, the promenade opens onto a broad level space; it ends beside the lighthouse, while its line continues across Curative Square toward Sopot’s pier.
