Skwer Wolnego Słowa, Warsaw

Memoriał Wolnego Słowa is the memorial running through this square, dedicated to people who printed and distributed prohibited texts under communist rule. The band across the paving forms a ninety-metre black censor’s stroke, built from black concrete on a steel frame. Beside the former censorship headquarters on Mysia Street, it peels away from the surface and exposes material once hidden; the severed mark embodies a struggle undertaken by thousands.

The headquarters operated from nineteen forty-six until nineteen ninety, while censorship policy was directed from the nearby party central committee. From nineteen seventy-seven through nineteen eighty-nine, this clandestine publishing culture created more than three thousand periodicals and more than seven thousand books. Its editors, printers, and distributors faced searches, confiscation, lost employment, beatings, arrest, and prison sentences.
