Marmorkirken, Copenhagen

Marmorkirken is the church before you, celebrated for its great dome and Rococo character. Ferdinand Meldahl gave the building its final design. Financial limits meant that limestone replaced the intended construction in marble.

The dome spans 31 metres, rests on twelve columns, and is Scandinavia’s largest church dome. King Frederick V laid the foundation stone on 31 October 1749, yet the church opened to the public only on 19 August 1894. Look at the statues encircling the building: they represent theologians and other figures from church history, including Kierkegaard.

Above the entrance, gold lettering carries a Danish statement that the Lord’s word lasts forever. Marmorkirken is an Evangelical Lutheran parish church, and it also serves as a concert venue.
