Kościół Zbawiciela, Sopot

Kościół Zbawiciela is Sopot’s Lutheran church, serving a parish based here and the bishop of the Pomeranian–Greater Poland diocese. It is not a cathedral, because that title is absent from this church’s official practice. Let the building’s elaborate, ceremonial character sink in.

Adolf Bielefeldt designed it, and its Neo-Baroque style draws on the lavish, dramatic language of the Baroque era. Sopot’s Protestant community began when settlers arrived during the eighteen twenties. In summer, the congregation grew to about a thousand people, and services took place outdoors.

A Peace Chapel followed, then the growing resort required a larger church. Construction on this building began in nineteen thirteen, on the chapel’s site. War delayed its dedication until October nineteen nineteen.

The organ was made during the war years by an Elbląg organ workshop, financed by the Łódź industrialist Eduard Herbst, and dedicated with the church. After the Second World War, this church took the name Kościół Zbawiciela from Saint George’s church, which had carried it before the war. It is now protected as a regional historic monument.
