Kościół pw. Świętej Anny, Warsaw
St Anne’s Church, dedicated to Saint Anne, stands beside Castle Square on Krakowskie Przedmieście as a Roman Catholic church. Founded in fourteen fifty-four for the Bernardine friars, it belongs among Warsaw’s oldest surviving buildings. Let the broad façade hold your attention: its present Neoclassical design, meaning an eighteenth-century return to the formal language of ancient Greece and Rome, was completed in seventeen eighty-eight.
Statues of the Four Evangelists animate that façade, carved by Jakub Monaldi and Franciszek Pinck. This building carries several eras at once. Its beginnings were Gothic, while the interior is high Baroque, richly furnished with frescoes and chapels.
In the cloister leading toward the vestry, Warsaw’s sole surviving diamond vault is preserved: a ceiling pattern built from faceted geometric compartments. War repeatedly tested this church. Fire destroyed its roof during the Warsaw Uprising, yet repairs followed soon afterward.
Later, excavations for the W-Z Route threatened the walls, demanding urgent reinforcement. Since nineteen twenty-eight, St Anne’s has served Warsaw’s academic community, a role that still gives this old church a distinctly youthful congregation.
