Kościół pw. Świętego Jerzego is the Roman Catholic garrison church on Kościuszki Street. Emperor Wilhelm the Second insisted that its tower could be seen by ships travelling across Gdańsk Bay.

The building’s manner is Neo-Gothic, a return to the medieval Gothic tradition. Ludwig von Tiedemann created the design. Wilhelm Lippke’s company built the church from eighteen ninety-nine to nineteen oh one; Tiedemann declined payment, and the emperor and Empress Augusta Victoria financed the work.

Let the pointed profiles and patterned brickwork hold your attention for a moment. The church began as a Protestant congregation dedicated to the Saviour, then became Catholic in nineteen forty-five. Military chaplaincy received it on the eighth of May that year, and the Polish Navy assumed responsibility later.

Its present role brings civilian worshippers and military personnel into the same church. Inside, a relief of Our Lady of Częstochowa, taken from the chapel of the historic ship m s Batory, was installed in a side altar in nineteen seventy-one. That maritime fragment makes a fitting detail in a church whose tower was deliberately made to speak to the bay.
