Kościół pw. Stygmatów św. Franciszka is a Franciscan church beside its convent in Warsaw’s New Town.

Its Baroque style belongs to an age of theatrical richness, where sacred spaces aim to move the emotions through abundance and drama. Let the façade’s layered silhouette introduce a story of persistence. Franciscans came to Warsaw in sixteen forty-six, aided by the Italian friar Vincent Skapita, chaplain to King Władysław the Fourth.

Their early timber church was lost during the Swedish Deluge; the present sanctuary grew from work begun in sixteen seventy-nine and received consecration in seventeen thirty-seven. The convent later held institutions as varied as a prison, orphanage, and clerical academy, before suppression after the January Uprising. During wartime, this church stood at the edge of the Warsaw Ghetto.

Bombing during the Warsaw Uprising killed about forty people sheltering in its crypts, yet much historic furnishing survived. Notice the dense devotional atmosphere within: the sanctuary preserves a painting of Christ in Gethsemane by Michael Willmann, while the altar painting shows Saint Francis receiving the stigmata. The main altar was destroyed in the bombing, then recreated using surviving column fragments.
