Kościół pw. Najświętszej Maryi Panny Wniebowziętej – Gwiazda Morza, Sopot

The Star of the Sea Church is Sopot’s Roman Catholic parish church on Kościuszki Street. Trace the masonry around the entrance and the tall tower. Local Catholics built this church in December nineteen oh two, intending it as a temporary place of worship before a permanent church could follow.

That later project never happened. The building was consecrated on the twenty-first of December and received its dedication to the Assumption of Mary, Star of the Sea. Bells cast in Apolda and altars from Munich arrived that year, followed by an organ made by the Wilhelm Sauer firm in nineteen oh three.

Its neo-Gothic character revives the soaring, pointed-arch language of medieval churches. A baptismal chapel was added in nineteen twenty-five; the tower gained two metres in nineteen thirty-one. Within, the church has a wooden ceiling and a chancel given a modern interior treatment in nineteen sixty-six.

Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński celebrated a confirmation Mass here in nineteen fifty-two, then returned for a youth service and sermon in nineteen fifty-eight. Restoration work closed the church from October twenty eighteen until the twenty-first of December twenty nineteen.
