Kościół pw. Najświętszego Serca Pana Jezusa, Sopot

Before you is the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a Roman Catholic parish church on Malczewskiego Street in Sopot. Its present role grew from a striking change of use: the building began as a cemetery chapel in an Evangelical burial ground, later made into a municipal cemetery after the war. Catholics assumed control on the seventh of October nineteen forty-six; it was consecrated for Catholic worship that December, and the parish was established that November.

Repairs during the following years reshaped the chapel into the church here today. The church gained three bells, cast in Wrocław by Emil Kozłowski in nineteen fifty-six. Its organ, made by Gdańsk organ-builder Wawrzyniec Richert, was blessed in nineteen sixty-eight and has ten stops.

In the sanctuary, Bogusław Marszał created a mosaic of the Last Supper in nineteen seventy-four. An archbishop’s decree has also made this parish church the seat of the Sopot deanery.
