Konkatedra Świętego Bartłomieja i Opieki Najświętszej Bogurodzicy, Gdańsk

This is the Co-Cathedral of Saint Bartholomew and the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos, a Greek Catholic church on Saint Bartholomew’s Lane in Gdańsk’s Old Town. Its long life is written into a fabric that has repeatedly changed hands and purpose. The church was built during the fifteenth century in the Gothic manner.

Notice the tower’s sturdy silhouette and the framed entrance: the tower was erected from 1591 to 1600, while the portal was made in 1647. The spire now crowning the tower dates from 1982. Within, an iconostasis separates the sanctuary in the Eastern Christian tradition.

From 1524 until its destruction in 1945, this was a Lutheran church. Following reconstruction it belonged to the Jesuits until 1990. Gdańsk’s Greek Catholic parish has existed since 1957, and this church became co-cathedral of the Wrocław–Gdańsk eparchy on the thirty-first of January 2001.

Since 2020, it has belonged to the Olsztyn–Gdańsk eparchy. In the small square by the church, the monument unveiled in 2015 honours Saint Vladimir and was created by Gennadiy Jerszow.
