Koneser, Warsaw
Koneser is a mixed-use complex woven into the former Warsaw Vodka Factory “Koneser” in Praga-Północ. The patterned masonry and tall openings around the courtyard keep the industrial scale close at hand. The factory began in eighteen ninety-seven as a spirit-refining works established by a Polish-Russian company.
During the interwar years, it employed more than four hundred people and could turn out a quarter of a million vodka bottles each day. Its distillery made familiar labels including Wyborowa, Luksusowa, Żubrówka, Żytniówka, and Siwucha. War halted that momentum; production resumed after postwar repairs and continued until the firm’s decline brought the factory to an end in the early years of this century.
The redevelopment retains and adapts factory buildings for homes, workplaces, shops, cafés, restaurants, and galleries, while contemporary buildings fill the remaining spaces. In the historic office building, Google opened Campus Warsaw for technology entrepreneurs in twenty fifteen; the campus later moved into the former spirit warehouse. Koneser’s neo-Gothic style draws on the pointed-arch language of medieval Gothic architecture. Juvenes Projekt prepared the revitalisation scheme, joining the old manufacturing precinct to everyday city life.
