Hötorgshallen, Stockholm
Hötorgshallen is Stockholm’s market hall, set beside Hötorget in the Beridarebanan quarter. Its story takes an unusual vertical turn: the earlier building was demolished in 1953, and its replacement opened below street level in 1958. Architect David Helldén designed the new hall on the same site during the redevelopment of Norrmalm.
The older hall was an iron-framed structure built between 1880 and 1884, with 120 stalls and an equal number of cellars. Today, the hall has a strongly international character, bringing food and specialities from kitchens around the world together in one destination. Look at the entrance and the surrounding market setting as you take in a place whose present form grew from a vanished hall and a move underground that made it harder for many visitors to find.
