Hofbräukeller, Munich

Hofbräukeller is the large historic building before you, now housing a Bavarian restaurant and beer garden in Haidhausen. Its architectural style is Neorenaissance, and construction dates to the late nineteenth century. The building served as a Hofbräu brewery from 1896 to 1988, after brewing moved elsewhere.

At the rear, wooden arcades belong to the beer garden; during the brewery years, they sheltered horses. This place also carries a difficult history. On 5 May 1919, Freikorps members shot Perlach citizens in the garden after the end of the Munich Soviet Republic; a memorial plaque at the beer garden’s northeastern entrance commemorates them.

On 16 October 1919, Adolf Hitler delivered his first political speech here. A fire gutted the surviving building on 6 April 1987, after which it was restored.
