Gröna Lund, Stockholm
Gröna Lund is the amusement park filling this compact stretch of Djurgården. Its name is commonly shortened to Grönan, and the park was established by Jacob Schultheis in 1883, making it Sweden’s first and oldest amusement park. The grounds extend across 3.8 ha and offer more than 30 attractions, among them a love tunnel, a funhouse, and seven roller coasters.
Its limited size comes from its central location, which restricts expansion, yet the park also works as a major summer concert venue, with three event venues. Musicians who have performed here include ABBA in 1973 and Bob Marley in 1980, followed much later by Dua Lipa and My Chemical Romance in 2022. The place also carries a grave recent chapter.
On 25 June 2023, Jetline partially derailed; one person died and nine were injured. An investigation found that an improperly manufactured replacement control arm caused the accident, and Jetline was removed. Gröna Lund’s history reaches back beyond the rides: the area had been used for amusement since the early 18th century, before Schultheis rented it for carousels and other amusements.
