Grand Café Orient, Prague

Grand Café Orient is the café inside the House of the Black Madonna, occupying a floor of Josef Gočár’s Cubist building. Look at the room’s crisp angles and geometric furnishings: the café was recreated through historical research, bringing period design back into an everyday interior. Gočár completed the house in 1912, and his original plan included a café from the beginning.

The earlier café survived for only about a decade. After the building’s long life as shops, bank offices and state workplaces, restoration returned the café to use in 2002 and 2003, alongside a museum devoted to Czech Cubism. You can pair a coffee with that museum here, and the café makes its own pastries, including a Czech věneček—a sweet cream wreath with a Cubist interpretation.
