Dworzec PKP Gdańsk Główny, Gdańsk

The tall brick tower and broad hall form Gdańsk Główny, the city’s chief passenger railway station. The tower reaches fifty metres, carries clock faces, and once hid a water tank before rail electrification. Its brickwork is richly dressed with sandstone, while the design blends Renaissance and Baroque references into a grand civic gateway.

The present station rose during the years from eighteen ninety-four to nineteen hundred and opened on the thirtieth of October nineteen hundred. Fire damaged the building in nineteen forty-five, but the tower survived and the station was restored after the war. Recent work returned the main hall’s historic character, including decorative wall paintings, crests, wood panelling, ceilings, floors, and Art Nouveau stained glass; the reconstruction ended in twenty twenty-three.

Beyond the hall lie five island platforms. Most commuter SKM trains in the Tricity call here, alongside regional, long-distance, and international services. This is where Gdańsk’s daily movement gathers: an ornate threshold between the old city and the railways reaching far beyond it.
