Forte di Belvedere, Florence
Forte di Belvedere is a fortress built to guard Florence, and its terraces now open a celebrated view across the city. The stronghold occupies the highest hill of the Boboli Gardens and is also recognised as a notable work of architecture. [narrativeExtractIt] Bernardo Buontalenti designed and built it for Grand Duke Ferdinando I de’ Medici between 1590 and 1595.

[articleExtractEn] Look at the fortress walls themselves: their angled arrangement lets each stretch be seen from another, allowing defenders to support neighbouring sections with crossfire. [articleExtractEn] Within the stronghold sits the Palazzina di Belvedere, a luxurious villa designed by Bartolomeo Ammannati around 1570, built as a refuge for the grand duke during unrest or epidemic.
[articleExtractEn] Beneath that building, a concealed chamber in a deep well was made to hold Medici treasures. [articleExtractEn] Galileo Galilei also used the fort for astronomical observations. [articleExtractEn] Today, the complex functions as a visitor attraction and exhibition venue, joining military design, courtly life and an expansive urban panorama in a single place.
