Fontanna Wielka, Warszawa

Fontanna Wielka is the fountain in Warsaw’s Saxon Garden, where an elaborate water display becomes a small monument to public engineering. Henryk Marconi designed it, and it entered service in eighteen fifty-five alongside Warsaw’s earliest water-supply network. Notice the generous cast-iron dish at the heart of the structure.

It was produced at a state machine works in Solec. The bowl beneath carries sculpted heads in low relief, while stone basins contain the ensemble. Four zinc dolphins perch along the outer basin’s rim and throw their streams inward; Herman Fritsch created their design, and Karol Juliusz Minter’s Warsaw workshop made them.

A sundial funded by Antoni Magier accompanies the fountain. This has endured several campaigns of repair. During the major restoration completed in two thousand six, conservators dismantled the fountain to the ground, addressed damage and leaks, then rebuilt it with modern controls.

Its seven-ton bowl came apart into eighteen pieces for treatment, before returning with a fresh protective coating. The result is a Victorian civic fountain that still performs its original purpose with theatrical flair.
