Fontanna Jasia Rybaka, Sopot

Fontanna Jasia Rybaka is a fountain near the lower end of Bohaterów Monte Cassino, the city’s showpiece promenade. It has marked this spot since nineteen ninety-eight. You meet it in a resort where water is more than scenery: Sopot’s own name comes from an ancient Slavic term for a murmuring stream or spring.

The town began as a fishing village in the late sixteenth century. A bathhouse established by Johann Georg Haffner in eighteen twenty-three helped set Sopot on its course as a seaside retreat. Haffner had arrived in Gdańsk as a surgeon with Napoleon’s Grande Armée, then made his home in Sopot.

That history gives this fountain a fitting role. Its water recalls the element hidden within the city’s name, while the promenade carries the easy rhythm of a place shaped by visitors. Sopot shares the Tricity urban area with Gdańsk and Gdynia, yet it thrives chiefly as a health resort and visitor destination.
