Det Kongelige Biblioteks Have, Copenhagen

Det Kongelige Biblioteks Have is a secluded garden beside the Royal Library, with flower beds, shady trees, and a basin that gives this small place its quiet character. At its heart, an eight-metre-high copper sculpture sends water cascading from the pool; sculptor Mogens Møller created it as a gift connected with the Royal Library’s Black Diamond extension. The garden occupies the former site of Christian IV’s Naval Harbour, which was filled in 1867.

Its design dates from 1920 and belongs to landscape gardener Jens Peder Andersen and architect Thorvald Jørgensen. Look for the old mooring ring built into the masonry at the far end: it recalls the ships that once used this harbour. A statue of Søren Kierkegaard also stands among the trees, made in 1918 by Louis Hasselriis.
