Cmentarz Żydowski, Sopot
This is Sopot’s Jewish cemetery, a small burial ground for the Jewish community that once lived here. It began around 1913 and covers about 0.5 hectares; burials continued until 1939, while official closure came in 1948. The cemetery suffered severe wartime and postwar damage, then received restoration between 1983 and 1989 through support from conservation authorities, Sopot and the Nissenbaum Family Foundation.
Look at the historic entrance gate: it is the only surviving Jewish cemetery gate in Pomerania, and its Hebrew inscription expresses the idea that this is the gate leading to God. Few gravestones still carry readable text, but the surviving inscriptions appear in Polish, German, Russian and Hebrew, with bilingual examples especially common. Among those buried here are members of prominent Jewish families from Gdańsk.
