Christiania, Copenhagen

Christiania is an intentional community occupying former military barracks in Copenhagen’s Christianshavn neighbourhood. Its community took shape after a military site was occupied in 1971. That beginning still defines the place: this is a lived experiment in communal life, not simply a former army compound.

The main commercial street, Pusher Street, became internationally associated with openly selling cannabis. In 2024, much of that trade was ended through cooperation between the police and most residents, and the street itself was dug up. That physical act makes the site’s recent history unusually tangible.

Christiania covers 7.7 hectares and has about 850 to 1,000 residents. Its ground also includes surviving parts of the Christianshavn ramparts, built as military defences in the seventeenth century. Look for the contrast between the old defensive landscape and the community that grew within it. Christiania began as a protest against conventional authority, and it remains a place where military infrastructure, collective living, and contested public space occupy the same setting.
